Wrapped in his own words, the bronze sculpture of poet William Butler Yeats was erected to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his death. This captivating statue is outside the Ulster Bank, on Stephen Street in Sligo Town.
Overlooking the Garavogue River in Sligo Town, it is easy to see why the visually striking statue of WB Yeats is one of Sligo’s most photographed attractions. Proudly standing over two metres high, this contemporary bronze sculpture, by artist Rowan Gillespie, was erected in 1989 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his death.
The statue looks across to the Yeats Building which is home to The Yeats Society and exhibitions about the poet.
This statue is a fitting tribute to WB Yeats and a focal point for visitors coming to Sligo to see first hand the places that inspired Sligo’s most famous son.
