Arigna Mining Experience in County Roscommon, is in a scenic location atop Kilronan Mountain, overlooking Lough Allen. It brings history to life with guided underground tours, led by former miners, into what was Ireland's last working coal mine.

Visitors are taken through 400 years of mining heritage and are able to experience first hand the working conditions and cramped spaces miners worked in for hours at a time. The constant dripping of water and the intensity of total darkness immerses visitors in personal stories of working in Ireland’s coal mining industry.

The underground tour and visitor centre are fully wheelchair and pram accessible. There are no stairs, lifts or cages. The visitor can also explore a display of historical documents, an extensive photographic exhibition and view original footage of miners at work before the closure of the mines in 1990. Visitors also enjoy stunning views from the onsite café. This immersive experience leaves a powerful and lasting impression.

Why we like it
  • Ireland's first coal mining museum.
  • Tour underground with a former miner.
  • Light and sound effects add to the reality of the experience.
  • Café on-site serving great lunches and snacks.
Tips from locals

Arigna is the starting point of the Miner’s Way and Historical Trail, a 118km-long network of paths through three of Ireland's most picturesque and unspoilt counties of Leitrim, Roscommon and Sligo. Hike a short section of the route on your visit to the mines.

Tips from locals

There is a lovely bar in Arigna called The Miners Bar, with open fires in winter and a beer garden in summer. Perfect for a pint after a visit to the mine.
