The Deserted Village Slievemore on Achill Island, in County Mayo, consists of a collection of cottages which seem frozen in time recalling days past and hardships endured.
Between 80 and 100 stone cottages on the southside of Mount Slievemore on Achill Island in County Mayo were abandoned and fell into ruins. It is thought that people had lived here, and on the mountainside of Slievemore, for more than 5,000 years and up to the middle of the 19th century.
While the reasons for the abandonment of the village are not completely known, it is possible that the land was taken over by an external party, which may have led to the evictions of the home owners.
