Shackleton Experience
Athy, Co. Kildare
Paid car parking
The Shackleton Experience in Athy, County Kildare, is the world’s only institution dedicated to polar explorer Ernest Shackleton, born in nearby Kilkea in 1874.

Combining advanced technology with the largest collection of Shackleton artefacts in the world, the Shackleton Experience showcases his inspiring journey, from his birthplace in County Kildare to the Polar ice caps. Visitors can view rare film footage in a 1920s style theatre and original artefacts including the actual cabin where Shackleton died on board the Quest. Also on display are Nimrod Expedition equipment and models of the Endurance, the Quest and the James Caird lifeboat.

Located in the meticulously restored 300 year old Town Hall with a modern iceberg shaped extension, the building provides a stunning view of the vibrant town of Athy and is just 45 minutes from Dublin City.
