Uncover Ireland's ancient history at one of the country's most important archaeological sites in Bonane Heritage Park 10km from Kenmare where the Ring of Beara meets the Ring of Kerry. The park has over 250 well-preserved sites from the Stone, Bronze and Iron Age right up to pre-Famine times and celebrates the first settlers who colonised the Irish countryside.
A local farmer discovered the connection between many of the ancient sites by accident when he noticed the sun rising on an acre of ground in the overgrown forest. A 2km loop trail takes you past a stone circle, a ringfort, standing stones and a fulacht fiadh, a burned mound thought to be used for cooking from 1500 to 500 BC.
Even for those with little interest in history the visual experience of the valley and mountains is stunning. Bonane is a perfect place for amateur and professional photographers and walkers.
