Walking Boot - Walking in Bonaveen Walking Trail
More from visitors like you
An ideal trail for nature lovers; lake shore stretches, leafy woodlands and fascinating wildlife abound on this moderate 12.4 km loop in Portumna, County Galway.

Perched by the northern shore of placid Lough Derg, Portumna Forest Park boasts a handful of pleasant walking routes. The Rinmaher Walking Trail is a lush 12.4 km loop and takes 2 hours to complete.

Moderate in grade, the loop traverses single track and ascends 10m overall. It begins along a two-way section of trail and covers much of this tranquil park. Boasting beautiful woodlands of Ash, Beech and Silver Birch, the loop also treats walkers to great views along the lake shore, near Rinmaher Point, southwards to Terryglass and east to Portumna Bridge.

Just some of the wildlife you may glimpse along this loop include majestic fallow deer, red squirrel, fox and badger.

The market town of Portumna is home to plenty of welcoming pubs, cafés and restaurants; perfect for that post-walk treat.

Why we like it
  • Portumna Forest Park was acquired by Coillte in 1948 and covers almost 450 hectares. Within the verdant park grounds you’ll find a 15th-century abbey and nearby, a 17th-century castle.
  • The Rinmaher Walking Trail is perfect for a family day out in the woods and better yet, it’s dog-friendly too. Why not bring a picnic and make a real day of it?
  • This loop showcases stunning vantage points over Lough Derg’s northern shores. This idyllic expanse of lake connects counties Clare, Tipperary and Galway.
  • In addition to the red squirrel, fallow deer, fox and badger; a white-tailed sea eagle has recently nested and raised chicks on an island close to the park.
