Explore a 4.5km loop in sublime Coole Park, County Galway and you’ll also discover the very beauty spots that inspired poet WB Yeats.

Following woodland paths, tracks and steps across Coole Park’s nature reserve, this looped trail connects seven different woods made famous by WB Yeats’ poems, including The Wild Swans of Coole.

Although the trail consists mainly of woodland paths, there are tree roots underfoot in places. Taking 1.25 hours to complete, this satisfying walk leads you past a viewing point for stunning Coole Lough and the nature reserve’s great expanse of wetland. Moderate in grade, the trail then takes you deeper into the pleasant woodland.

Along the way you’ll pass the remnants of Coole Park’s 18th-century built heritage including a stable yard, old stone walls and a limekiln. Reward your woodland travels with a hot drop or lunch in Coole Park’s Tea Rooms or in any of the welcoming pubs and cafés in nearby Gort.

The Autograph Tree is located in Coole Park near Gort. They are all deceased now, of course, these literary giants, who were involved in the Irish Literary Revival at the start of the 20th Century, yet their spirits still inhabit this special tree amongst the silent woods.
