Explore the natural beauty and the rich history to be found on Sherkin Island in West Cork.

Set in Roaringwater Bay, just under 2km from the fishing village of Baltimore on mainland Cork, Sherkin Island is the ancestral home of the O’Driscoll clan. Explore their former home of Dunalong Castle which lies just above the pier. While you're at it, be sure to check out the ruins of a 15th century Franciscan abbey, a popular site amongst all visitors.

Another iconic landmark on the island is the lighthouse. Wander over to Barrack Point to admire the early 19th century monument which is now maintained by the locals themselves.

Of course, you can't miss the stunning natural landscape on the island. Take a stroll past banks of red fuchsia, bright orange montbretia and rocky fields hemmed in by dry stone walls. Or go for a swim at one of the island's three sandy beaches and spot seals, dolphins or the porpoises which gave the island its name.

Add Sherkin Island to your summer itinerary and enjoy a range of activities, from live traditional music to the Sherkin Family Regatta.
