McCullen’s extensive research, culminating in his latest volume, offers a comprehensive examination of the park’s multifaceted history. From the introduction of ornamental plantations and landscape schemes, such as those at the Gough Monument and Citadel Pond, to infrastructural developments like the iconic bandstand and tea kiosk, the park’s physical landscape underwent notable changes during this period. Additionally, the talk will highlight the park’s role in hosting major events, including the 1903 International Speed Trials, the 1932 Eucharistic Congress and the 1979 Papal Visit, each reflecting significant cultural and social changes in Ireland.
