Knocknarea Mountain, one of Sligo's most prominent landmarks, sits on the Coolera peninsula between the bays of Sligo and Ballisodare. Atop Knocknarea is a large Neolithic Cairn which is believed to be the tomb of Queen Maeve. Legend has it that Maeve was buried standing upright with armour on and spear in hand, facing her enemies in Ulster. There are three walking trails on Knocknarea Mountain. The Queen Maeve Trail, the Knocknarea Trail and the Rathcarrick Trail which create a 6km looped walk and take approx 2 hours to complete. The summit offers panoramic views of Strandhill, Rosses Point and the beautiful Benbulben. On a clear day you can even spot Nephin in Mayo and Slieve League sea cliffs in Donegal! Please do not climb the cairn.
